Blog 7- The Development of My choreography Solo

(Brown, 2022)

In this blog, I will be discussing the development and inspirations that helped the creation of my choreography solo. The first step in my creative process was the Stimulus, my group discussed and brainstormed ideas that came to mind from the art work. We all agreed that our piece would be linked to the idea of isolation, being trapped and our body language would display the physical and mental states of this character. Collectively, we had themes for each section and we linked them all back to the theme of being trapped.

The first section was choreographed collaboratively and was in interpretation of the stimulus image of the women being in the jail cell. We choreographed this section using clear counts and we workshopped movements that best convey the image, the mood for this section is very eerie and disassociated as she accepted her aloneness.

The second section was choreographed by myself based on Locked-in Syndrome, this section includes the embodiment of the internal isolation and loneliness they're feeling and expressing their frustration. Throughout this section there are moments of stillness which reflect the physical state of the person being unresponsive and unreactive, then moving into sudden actions that are a development of the extreme emotions. I portray this by using contrasting movements of sharp arms against the heavy movements.

The third section was choreographed by Lily Doyle, who based her section on insane asylums. Throughout this section the movements replicate the actions of being restrained and restricted. This is developed by using choreographic devices like repetition and climaxing movements, that show the outbursts and escapism the character is feeling.

The fourth section was choreographed by Izzy Charman, the theme was hallucinations. Throughout this choreography there are contrasts of grounded and more elevated movements that travel along the space. This shows how the hallucinations can be severe and how the character can lose or gain control over them.

The last section was inspired by feeling trapped in the community and having no freedom and individuality in today's society. Additionally, these movements are the representation of the character expressing their raw emotions and being out of control by the end of the piece. This is developed by using dynamics that are suspended and sudden. The end of the piece is a symbolisation of weightlessness and finally expressing how you truly feel. The movements could be interpreted as peaceful but also give a sense of defeat as the dancer walks to the back of the stage.

The process we used as a group was very efficient and organised as we created set counts and sectioned the music for each part of the solo. After each lesson we also videoed the new choreography so we could revise them outside of class, this means we could individually focus on sections we found difficult. We also workshopped a lot of the collaborative sections which allowed us to incorporate the creativity of the whole group. We discussed and modified some sections of the choreography to suit each other and make the movements flow better individually.

The music for our choreography piece was selected as a group. We used two pieces of music, ‘Riddles, Riddles Everywhere’ by Michael Giacchino and ‘What’s the Plan’ by Lady Gaga, Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe. We edited the 30 seconds of the ‘Riddles, Riddles Everywhere’ and then transitioned it into ‘Whats the Plan’. The two pieces of music work well together as the first section ends on a climax and the second piece starts with a build of suspenseful music. The music is intense with sections of suspense and then outburst of instrumentals.

To conclude, I plan to rehearse the choreography and develop the artistry of the solo in the next couple of weeks. I will do this by referring back to the stimulus and the theme, then incorporating that emotion into the physicality of the dance. I also aim to apply feedback given from my draft piece, then develop the solo more. This will allow me to include more interpretations and will allow me to question my own movements in the process.

The solo sounds like it has come together good and for the next couple of weeks to be spent on focusing into incorporating emotion into the dance will take it to another level.

  2. I really like how all of your ideas as a group work well together to create one whole overall message
