Blog 5- Wayne McGregor Choreographic Devices

 (TEDtalksDirector, 2012)

In this blog, I will be discussing a short motif that I have created using inspiration from Wayne McGregor’s demonstration on TED talks. He explains and shares his choreographic pathway by showing how he can create a phrase and have his dancers execute and interpret parts of it to create choreography. He describes the dancers as objects and lines so the audience can visualise their movements as an embodiment of the word instead of people dancing (McGregor, 2012). In the demonstration he uses the stimulus of the word “ted” to create his movements (TEDtalksDirector, 2012). He visualises the word in many forms to create different angles for his choreography. For example, he imagines the word flattened on the floor, writing the letters with his body movements and also being inside the letters (TEDtalksDirector, 2012). This creates an abstract piece with many interpretations for the audience and allows the dancers to have a varied creativity process.

I have created my motif by using the letters of my name “Lily”, I have used inspiration from McGregor’s presentation and visualised the word in different forms to create my movements. This includes imagining the word as 3D letters and dancing inside of them, drawing the letters with my body movements and imaging the letters on the ground. This allowed me to explore many actions and dynamics. For example, I used sharp movements contrasting with smooth actions and fluidity to differentiate the letters from each other. In my motif, I also filled the space sideways and up and down but still remained static and did not travel massively.

    1. This helped me as I used imagery to help me inspire the movements. When I was creating new choreography, I referred back to the stimulus to visualise the shapes and lines of the image.

  2. Would you use this method of creating a motif in your future choreography?

    1. If I was to choreograph a group piece, I would definitely incorporate elements of this method as we could workshop ideas. Also, it's a good toll as we can visualise the movements and shapes and incorporate them into choreography.
