Blog 4- My Chosen Practitioner

Image
(Studio Wayne McGregor, 2022). In this blog, I will be discussing the choreography works of Wayne McGregor. I was drawn to McGregor as I appreciate his versatility and adaptability to whatever stimulus he is creating for. He has worked on pieces for award shows, movies, he also worked a lot with The Royal Ballet and created a holographic tour for the ABBA band (Studio Wayne McGregor, 2022). He works a lot collaboratively with dancers, writers, visual artists and scientists etc. The dancers in his company also have input in his creative works and his choreography develops creativity and furthers science, technology and research (Studio Wayne McGregor, 2022). I have researched a piece created with dancers from The Royal Ballet called the +/- Human. His process behind the dance was the questioning of how you know if something is alive. He uses complex programmes and motion sensors to create computer intelligent orbs that react and engage to movement in their environment. I find the ...

Blog 3- My Stimulus and Further Research

Image
(Kurncz, 2017) For this blog I will be discussing what drew me to the stimuli and what interpretations I drew from the piece of art. I chose this particular stimulus because I was intrigued by the colours and how the art had many different perceptions and interpretations to explore. When I first saw this art, two main ideas came to mind. The first interpretation I decided to explore was a condition called Locked-in Syndrome. Locked in syndrome requires both wakefulness and awareness, meaning the patient has full awareness but has the inability to do basic reflexes (NHS, 2022). This art reminded me of this, as the lady in the image has the inability to see, hear and she has her mouth closed. This relates back to the art, as she is isolated and in an inescapable environment. She is almost a reflection of the internal struggle people with this condition experience. Additionally, the woman is being watched through glass and almost seen as just an image with no depth of her personalit...

A Critique of Justin Pecks “In The Countenance of Kings”

Image
( San Francisco Ballet, 2022) In this blog, I will be discussing a piece by Justin Peck named "In the Countenance of Kings'' performed by San Francisco Ballet. My first impressions of this piece were very positive and uplifting. The music was very light and there were chimes throughout the music, this could represent a sign of hope. At the start of the piece, a dancer has just finished performing and looks defeated and fatigued. When she stands to look in the mirror, she sees a reflection of herself. In her reflection she is wearing a red leotard, suggesting a sense of power and confidence (Smith, 2022). In comparison to her blue leotard, which could show commitment and dependability but also sadness (Smith, 2022). This could represent progression or a futuristic version of herself as her reflection appears to have more confident body language and a strong eye contact. She also takes down her hair and is wearing trainers, representing a sense of freedom and independence....

Week One- A reflection of Choreographic Tasks/ Processes

Image
In our first lesson, we chose our stimulus and we discussed our interpretations on the art. We discussed the idea of the absence of senses (like blindness and deafness). Also, leading onto this there was a discussion about locked-in syndrome, as this is a rare neurological disorder where people are able to think and feel but have the inability to move (Locked-in Syndrome, 2021). Another interpretation discussed within the group was the idea of society controlling peoples image, leading to a society of people who are the same. The latex suit could symbolise protection and the idea of hiding your true identity to avoid vulnerability.  (Kurncz, 2017) In our second lesson, we created a group piece using different words in a random order. Firstly, we wrote down choreographic devices, like (negative space, cannon and unity). We numbered these devices to create 3 random sequences of devices we had to include in our choreography. As a group, we decided to combine the three sequence...
